Major Pennant Golf Update

Our Men’s Major Pennant Team has taken a giant step towards remaining in Division 1 with a fantastic away victory against Cronulla on Sunday.

After rain and course closures ended the Major Pennant Season early back in February, our Men were unlucky to finish the season in fourth position, forcing them into a do-or-die relegation battle against Cronulla.

Michael Organ fought hard all day before eventually going down on the 17th Hole to the Cronulla Club Champion, before Jonah Metuangaro got the team back on level terms, coming from behind to record a strong 3 & 2 victory.

Josh Scott secured a vital half point in the number 5 match, before Penrith took control of the two-legged tie with some clutch performances in the middle order.

Dale Hughes exercised some 18th hole bunker demons with a fantastic up and down from the sand on the final hole to win his match 1up, whilst Jeff Gadd made a monster 20-foot birdie putt on the same hole moments later to pick up another half point.

When Josh Gadd went down in the number 1 match the scores were tied at 3-3, but Blade Gadd ensured Penrith returned home with a valuable away victory, winning 2 & 1 in the most impressive performance of the day.

The return leg will be played at Penrith Golf Club on Sunday 10th July with Penrith needing only a half to remain in Division 1 for a third consecutive season. We encourage all club members to come out and support the team in the match.

Please note upcoming events:

Yours truly,
The Golf Committee.

2022 FAMILY CUP

Penrith Golf Club

The 2022 Family Cup was played last Sunday. Congratulations to the father and son team of Craig and Zavier Button who won this years title with 42 points on a count back from the runner up husband and wide team of James and Carol Field. In third place was the father and son team of Todd and Riley Cleminson with 41 points. Thank you to all who competed.

2022 TOP GUN CHAMPIONSHIP

Top Gun

Well, we finally got the 2022 Top Gun Championship run and won. Congratulations to the solid Gareth Pinn who triumphed in the end over seasoned and experienced campaigner Terry Utakea. In third place was the big hitting Ben McGovern. Gareth is now an automatic qualifier for the 2023 Top Gun Shootout. For full results see [here]. Well done to all the players who played over the 2 days after the initial day was washed after 5 holes. Both days were certainly testing and particularly on the second day when the course was barely playable. Getting the final finished certainly avoided a few other complications if it had to be deferred later down the track. So thank you. Thank you also to the volunteers who came out both days to help marshal the field and score – your help is most appreciated and without you this event would not be able to be held. Prize money for all 19 players who made the final is available at the pro shop.

Captains Knockout

Captains Knockout

The qualifying for the 2022 Captains Knockout was completed Saturday 23 April 22. Congratulations to all the qualifiers. Please see [here] for a list of qualifiers and their first round opponents. The first round will be played on Saturday 14 May 22. The timesheet has been completed for this – please check your times. Good luck to everyone. Please note, it is the winners responsibility to advise the pro shop of your result at the completion of the match. Thanks.

TURNER REPEATS MATCH PLAY HEROICS IN EPIC FINAL

Dale Turner produced a storming finish to claim a second straight Penrith Golf Club Match Play Championship on Saturday.
In a gripping final that was literally the master versus the apprentice, 48-year-old Turner outlasted 21-year-old Michael Organ to win on the 34th hole.
The pair first crossed paths when Organ played in the under-15 cricket team coached by Turner, who over seven years from the mid 90s was a member of the NSW and Queensland cricket squads.
Turner described his young charge as a stout opening batsmen and on Saturday Organ displayed that same determination as he kept taking the fight to the reigning champ in a high-quality contest.
There can be no doubt over Turner’s resilience after consecutive Match Play titles and certainly the manner of Saturday’s victory.
But what many do not know is it is 10 years since he was diagnosed with leukemia, which he overcame but where the treatments attacked his bones and he needed hip replacement surgery.
Unlike last year’s final where Turner defeated Gordon McCall 6 and 5, he found himself having to fight back a number of times.
Turner led 1-up through nine holes and claimed the 10th before Organ made a great par save to win the 11th.
Turner then birdied the 12th and 13th holes for a 3-up lead but Organ again answered the challenge when he won the 15th and reduced the margin to just one hole when he hit his second shot to six metres on the par-five 17th and two-putted for birdie.
Organ’s power game was again on display on the par-five 19th hole when he reached the front fringe for two and made birdie.
A sensational scrambling par on the 20th gave Organ the lead and he had all the momentum.
He could have been 2-up on the 23rd but Turner produced one of the shots of the day when he made par after a penalty drop with a brilliant punch shot under trees from 145 metres to two metres and holed the putt for par.
Turner then put his foot down with birdies on the 24th, 25th and 26th to lead 2-up.
Organ cut the deficit to one with another fine scrambling par on the 29th hole, and the match was set for a barnstorming finish, but Turner produced two moments of genius to settle the contest.
After the 30th and 31st holes were halved, Turner birdied the 32nd where his approach clipped the flagstick and settled inside a metre. He then hit a superb tee shot to just outside a metre on the par-three 33rd for another birdie and just like that was 3-up with three to play.
Turner hit probably his best drive of the day on the 34th and a fine approach from 150 metres to inside six metres set up a rock-solid par and the title was again his.
Organ was outstanding throughout the match with his driving a feature. The upside of his game seems to have no limit and major club titles cannot be far away.
The A Reserve final between reigning champion Anthony Swinfield and Craig Coulter could not be played after Swinfield succumbed to a virus.
Coulter must be commended after he refused to accept a forfeit and the match has been rescheduled for this Saturday, weather permitting.
The C Grade final between Blake Messenger and Nathan Byrnes will be played on April 9.

2022 Top Gun Shootout

Top Gun
Unfortunately the shocking weather Sydney has experienced over the past few months has hit yet another major event with the 2022 Top Gun Shootout having to be suspended after the completion of 5 holes. We teed off in barely playable conditions after the rain on Friday night and Saturday. We managed to work through the first major downpour only to be smashed again a couple of hours later that rendered the course unplayable. The event will be re-convened to a date in the near future. Players will receive an email with the new details shortly. The Calcutta will remain as is and prize money paid out at the conclusion of the event. Many thanks to the players who braved the conditions and to the volunteers who took time out of their weekend to help out in the unpleasant weather we experienced.

Penrith Ladies – 2022 Division 4 Grade Pennant Winners

Congratulations to the Penrith Ladies Grade team. The final round was against Royal Sydney who were also undefeated. It came down to the wire with the Penrith ladies winning with 3/2 victory. Well done to all players and caddies.
