ZAVIER ZEROES IN ON ANOTHER TITLE

Fifteen-year-old Zavier Button is quickly making a name for himself as a player for the big occasion after he claimed the B Grade division of the 2022 Penrith Golf Club Match Play Championship on Saturday.”

Button has been playing golf for just 18 months but has already lowered his handicap to 11, won the Junior Championship, the Captain’s Knockout and now a Match Play title.

In heavy conditions on Saturday, Button prevailed 3 and 1 over Jarrad Smith in a hard-fought contest with several lead changes.

Button gained the early ascendancy by winning the first two holes before Smith found his feet and by the turn had taken a 1-up lead.
The front nine was one of continual ebb and flow with not one hole halved and Smith maintained his advantage through 11 holes before Button made a match-winning charge by claiming the 12th, 13th and 14th holes.
For Smith a lost ball on the 13th hole was a body blow and he was unable to reel in Button, who closed out the match with a winning par on the 17th hole.

Button will be hitting the road over the next fortnight as he contests major junior tournament in Bathurst and Wagga.

The B Grade final was the first decided in the rain-interrupted Match Play Championships, which has seen a clash of dates resulting scheduling issues.

This Saturday, the A Grade and A Reserve finals will be played, while the C Grade final will be played on April 9.

The A Grade final will be played over 36 holes, where reigning champion Dale Turner faces Major Pennant representative Michael Organ in what shapes as a great contest.

Turner has shown a steely resolve in his preliminary matches and his rock solid game presents a hurdle for Organ, who, for his part, has been equally impressive after bedding in swing changes that have taken his game to a new level.

In the A Reserve final, Anthony Swinfield will also be defending his title when he takes on the ultra consistent Craig Coulter.

The C Grade final will see Blake Messenger face Nathan Byrnes.

Major Pennant Competition – Round 4

On Sunday we travelled to Pymble Golf Club for round 4 of the Major Pennant competition. After a tied match with Pymble the previous week we knew we were a good chance at taking the win. However, in an almost identical contest, the teams could not be separated, and the match ended in a 3.5 to 3.5 tie.
Michael Organ led the team away and continued his run of match play form to win comfortably. Pymble fought back to win the next 3 matches before Jeff Gadd halted their momentum with a tie. It was the Gadd boys who came home strong to secure wins in the final 2 matches and square the contest.
Thank you again to our loyal crew of supporters. Getting to the club for a 5am bus is a big ask and the team really appreciates your efforts. Thanks also to those who dropped by during the day to cheer us on.
Our next match will be against Moore Park Golf Club this Sunday 27th February at Penrith. The first match will tee off at 11:15am. It is our last home game for the regular season, so we would love to see as many supporters as possible out there to help get us over the line in a must-win match.

Metropolitan Major Pennant – RD 3

Golf Results

Round 3 of the Metropolitan Major Pennant took place last Sunday against Pymble Golf Club. After 2 losses to St Michael’s the boys were keen to notch up our first win. The recent form of Pymble gave us confidence that we could get the job done but we were forced to settle with a 3.5 to 3.5 tie.

Slotting in at number 7 this week Chris Lawler held strong against a fast-finishing opposition. He got up and down from the back of 18 to tie the first match. The first of our 3 wins was from an in-form Alex Platts. He backed up his away win last week with a 2 and 1 victory making it 2 from 2. In our 2nd win Dale Hughes bounced back from last weeks loss with a dominant performance taking a 6 and 5 victory. With the team down 3.5 to 2.5 it came down to Josh Gadd in the final match. On the 18th hole both players blocked their drive right into trouble. Josh played and outstanding recovering shot to put the pressure on his opponent. The pressure proved too strong, and Josh was able to win the match to claim the tie for the team.

Thank you once again to all that came out to cheer the team on. Your support is invaluable.

Our next match will be the return leg against Pymble Golf Club this Sunday 20th February at Pymble. The first match will tee off at 7am.
